Countertop Styles

Most homeowners begin to consider countertop styles when they are remodeling their kitchen or bathroom or are installing countertops and cabinets for the first time in a new home. There are a number of different styles of countertops that can be used both in the bathroom and kitchen as well as other areas of the home. The price ranges significantly between the lower end manufactured countertops compared to the signle piece natural stone countertops. Here's a list of the most common countertop styles chosen by homeowners:

• Laminate - Also known as formica, these are thin sheets of plastic or manufactured material that are glued over wood to form the countertop. Laminate comes in a wide variety of sizes, patterns, and colors, and is also one of the least expensive countertop types.
• Tile - Using ceramic, porcelain, or glass tiles, these countertops provide a unique look and are not very expensive to install. Sizes typically range from 4" to 12" squares and grout is used between the tiles. One downfall with these types of countertops is the effort required to replace any broken tiles.
• Stainless Steel - One of these newest types of countertops, these add a very modern look but at a steep price. In addition, these countertops can easily dent so careful about dropping heavy objects on them.
• Marble - Beautiful but expensive natural stone that is also porous so be extremely careful about placing any acidic food or items on the countertop as it will cause damage. Marble is often used in bathrooms as well.
• Granite - Often the most common countertop for any type of luxury remodeling or new homes. These are large slabs of natural stone that can be used in both bathrooms and kitchens and are very durable and stain resistant as well as very elegant looking.

There are a number of different styles of countertops to choose from nowadays. First, determine how much your are willing to spend. If price is an issue then laminate might be a great option. If you are willing to spend a little more then consider choosing granite. Your local home improvement store should be able to provide a number of samples for each type so that you can take them home and get an idea of how things will look in your kitchen or bathroom. Countertops are typically installed by professionals due to the level of detail and complexity of the installation.
